South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist impulses. Nonetheless, it is healthier than what one might expect.

Origins

The academic and policy analysts remain sharply divided on the extent to the extent that these two developments are driving Koreas evolution towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies the key factors that are driving these developments.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their views to this group. A 2009 survey revealed that almost one third of respondents do not believe in the theory of evolution. Of those who voted, 41% said that there wasn't enough evidence from science to support the theory; 39% said the theory contradicted their religion and 17% claimed it was difficult to comprehend. In the past of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and in bringing them to Christ. In 1980 the year 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. The event attracted an audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.
The success of this event led to the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31, 1981. The event was extensively covered in the national media, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.
KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, which covered its activities and also published articles on the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR as well as a few books on creationism that were already published outside of Korea. KACR members also gave talks in universities and churches across the country.
A KACR success was seen at KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised money and secured funding to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.
In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. This magazine covers topics that pertain to the science of creation. It also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has a network of local branch offices that give talks and seminars to schoolchildren and community groups.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life.
