The Ghost uses the data bus CAN to communicate with your vehicle. This stops thieves adding a new key or even replacing the ECU to get around your security system because it requires a valid PIN code to start the engine.
The Ghost is unique to other immobilisers as it doesn't use key-fobs or LED indicators. Instead, it uses the buttons in your vehicle to allow you to enter a unique disarm sequence that only you are aware of.
Stop & Start
If you've previously driven a brand new BMW or used the stop-start feature then you may have noticed that once stopped the engine continues to be running for approximately 30 seconds after releasing the brake pedal. The BMW engine management system continues to monitor the vehicle for signals coming from the ignition key. If it detects this, the vehicle will continue to run. Our BMW ghost immobiliser is a unique next-generation device that does not require cutting OEM wires or adding aftermarket alarms and key fobs. It is hooked up to the BMW's CAN data network and programmed with an encrypted, secure PIN code that is accessible through buttons in your car. This allows you to enter a specific key push sequence that isn't found in the normal menus for media, such as volume up/down, source, cruise control or air conditioning on that prevents your car from starting unless the sequence is entered. The PIN is between 4 and 20 characters, making it difficult for thieves to figure out.
We can also add to the system a service/valet mode. This mode is activated when your car is being serviced so that the Ghost is away from the garage. This can be achieved by pressing the service button on your infotainment device 5 times (the system will flash to confirm this) and when you return the Ghost will re-arm automatically.

Service / Valet Mode

It uses the factory buttons of your vehicle to generate an unique sequence of pushes that only you know. This is similar to the pin code security of your mobile phone. If you are parked at home or in a meet and greet situation, the Ghost can be set to service mode. This allows you to start the vehicle using your keys, but it stops the engine from starting until the correct code is entered. This is a great option for those who have to hand their cars over to valet services or other trusted friends & family members. This lets you take your car to the garage for servicing and maintenance, or other maintenance. without having to worry about it being altered by an expert mechanic while you wait.
If the service/valet mode has been activated and enabled, your BMW will not be able to drive after it has been turned on. This will stop anyone else from driving it while you are away. Once you return it will revert back to normal stopping your vehicle from being damaged or stolen again.

If the anti-hijacking mode has been activated and the engine is restarted, any attempt to restart the engine will be thwarted. If the system detects that the vehicle has stopped moving it will honk the horn and flash the indicators, in case it fails to find the correct code it will also stall the engine (where possible). By entering your push sequence or entering service mode, you can deactivate the Anti-Hijack function. This allows your vehicle to temporarily start without having to enter PIN.
If you own an GPS device connected to your BMW, you can make use of it to disable the Anti-Hijack function to allow you to navigate using your navigation system even when the vehicle is stationary. If you own a smartphone, you can also hook it up to your Ghost app to control the anti-hijack function and other functions.

You can also track your vehicle's location on the map in real-time using your smartphone.

Ghost lets you stop this from happening by installing a device called Secure-A Key in your vehicle. The device is inserted into your vehicle's key-fob and will disconnect the battery after a couple of minutes of inactivity.
