What is Pragmatics?
Pragmatics is the study of the connection between context, language and meaning. It addresses issues like: What do people mean by the words they use?
It's a philosophy that focuses on practical and reasonable actions. It's in contrast to idealism, the belief that you must always abide to your beliefs.
What is Pragmatics?
The study of pragmatics focuses on how language users communicate and interact with each with one another. It is often viewed as a part of language however it differs from semantics because pragmatics studies what the user intends to convey, not what the meaning actually is.
As a research field, pragmatics is relatively new and its research has grown rapidly over the past few decades. It has been primarily an academic field of study within linguistics but it also influences research in other fields such as speech-language pathology,

There are a variety of perspectives on pragmatics, which have contributed to its development and

For example, one perspective is the Gricean approach to pragmatics which is focused on the concept of intention and how it interacts with the speaker's knowledge of the listener's understanding. Other perspectives on pragmatics include the conceptual and lexical approaches to pragmatics. These perspectives have contributed to the variety of topics that researchers in pragmatics have studied.
Research in pragmatics has been focused on a broad range of topics, including L2 pragmatic comprehension, production of requests by EFL learners and the role of theory of mind in both mental and physical metaphors. It has been applied to cultural and social phenomena such as political discourse, discriminatory speech and interpersonal communication. Researchers in pragmatics have used various methods from experimental to sociocultural.
Figure 9A-C demonstrates that the size of the knowledge base for pragmatics differs depending on the database used. The US and UK are two of the top performers in pragmatics research. However, their position is dependent on the database. This is because pragmatics is an interconnected field that connects other disciplines.
It is therefore difficult to rank the best pragmatics authors solely based on the number of their publications. It is possible to determine influential authors based on their contributions to the field of pragmatics. For instance, Bambini's contribution to pragmatics has led to concepts like conversational implicature and politeness theory. Other highly influential authors in pragmatics include Grice, Saul and Kasper.
What is Free Pragmatics?
The study of pragmatics is more concerned with the contexts and users of language as opposed to the study of truth, reference, or grammar. It focuses on the ways in which one expression can be understood to mean various things depending on the context, including those caused by ambiguity or indexicality. It also focuses on the strategies used by listeners to determine which phrases have a message. It is closely connected to the theory of conversational implicature, developed by Paul Grice.
The boundaries between these two disciplines are a matter of debate. While the distinction between these two disciplines is widely known, it isn't always clear where the lines should be drawn. For instance philosophers have suggested that the notion of a sentence meaning is an aspect of semantics. Others have argued that this type of thing should be treated as a pragmatic problem.
Another issue that has been a source of contention is whether the study of pragmatics should be regarded as to be a linguistics branch or an aspect of philosophy of language. Some researchers have argued pragmatics is an independent field and should be treated as part of linguistics,

Syntax, semantics, etc. Others, however, have suggested that the study of pragmatics should be viewed as part of the philosophy of language because it examines the ways in which our concepts of the meanings and functions of language influence our theories of how languages work.
The debate has been fuelled by a number of key issues that are fundamental to the study of pragmatism. For example, some scholars have claimed that pragmatics isn't a discipline in and of itself because it studies the ways in which people interpret and use language without necessarily referring to any facts regarding what is actually being said. This type of approach is known as far-side pragmatics. Some scholars, however have argued that this field ought to be considered an independent discipline since it studies the ways that cultural and social factors influence the meaning and usage of language. This is known as near-side pragmatics.
The pragmatics field also discusses the inferential nature of utterances and the role of primary pragmatic processes in determining the meaning of what a speaker is expressing in a sentence. These are topics that are discussed a bit more extensively in the papers written by Recanati and Bach. Both papers deal with the notions of saturation as well as free pragmatic enrichment, which are crucial pragmatic processes in that they shape the overall meaning of a statement.
What is the difference between free and explanatory Pragmatics?
Pragmatics is the study of how context contributes to the meaning of language. It examines how language is utilized in social interaction, and the relationship between the interpreter and

Over the years, many different theories of pragmatism were developed. Some, like Gricean pragmatics, concentrate on the communication intention of a speaker. Others, like Relevance Theory are focused on the understanding processes that occur during utterance interpretation by hearers. Certain pragmatic approaches have been incorporated together with other disciplines like cognitive science or philosophy.
There are different opinions about the line between semantics and pragmatics. Morris is one philosopher who believes that semantics and pragmatism are two different topics. He claims semantics concerns the relationship between signs and objects that they might or may not represent, while pragmatics is concerned with the use of words in context.
Other philosophers,

Near-side pragmatics concerns what is said while far-side is focused on the logical implications of saying something. They argue that some of the 'pragmatics' that accompany an utterance is already influenced by semantics, while other 'pragmatics' are determined by the pragmatic processes of inference.
The context is among the most important aspects of pragmatics. This means that a single utterance may have different meanings depending on factors like ambiguity or indexicality. Other factors that could alter the meaning of an expression include the structure of the discourse, speaker intentions and beliefs, as well as listener expectations.
Another aspect of pragmatics is that it is culturally specific. It is because every culture has its own rules for what is acceptable in various situations. For instance, it is acceptable in certain cultures to keep eye contact but it is considered rude in other cultures.
There are numerous perspectives on pragmatics and much research is being conducted in this area.
