The country is searching for an alternative development model. A Confucian culture that values respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues influence the society. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend that is emerging.
Origins
In the prehistoric era the ancestors of modern Koreans survived by hunting and gathering wild food. Then around 10,000 years ago they began to cultivate crops like millet and beans. They also raised livestock and made furs. These tribes formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. In 2333 BCE Gojoseon was founded in the southern region of the peninsula. The state adopted Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture, including Confucian philosophy. In this period the people of Buyeo became part of Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical state with the monarch and top officials were members of the aristocracy of the land, while the majority of the population was peasants. The state extracted taxes from these citizens and sometimes required them to fight in the army or work on projects of the government, like building fortifications.

Evolution in Korea
The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. The earliest evidence of human settlements are evident in the form stone-lined cist graves with precious items like amazonite jewellery being buried along with the dead. Megalithic structures, known as dolmens and built of single large stones, are prevalent throughout the country.
In the first second half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognisable political state. The peninsula was then controlled by a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE), including Baekje and Goguryeo. The northern portion of the peninsula was occupied for a period by the Balhae Kingdom, which historians do not believe to be a true Korean state.
After the Three Kingdoms arose the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period, also known as the Several States Period. Of them, Baekje was the most powerful but its dynasty dissolved by the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE leaving it with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy prospered for a period of time.
The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged, and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territories. Silla, with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.
As Korea is entering a post-crisis period its development model appears to be in flux. The people who are awed by the enormous costs of the old systems are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand those who support the old system are seeking to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and exaggerating fears of job loss.
The academic and policy analysts remain in a tense debate about the extent to the extent that these two developments are driving Koreas development towards an economic model that is radically different from the one of governance. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's development in terms of its political development: illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and participatory democracy (2002). This article also identifies key elements that are the driving force behind these developments.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their beliefs to this group. A 2009 survey showed that nearly a third of respondents were against evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs, and 17% said they did not know what it meant. The level of doubt is similar to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.
In the past, the majority of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on teaching college students and in bringing them to Christ. An increase in interest in creation science began in the year 1980, following an all-day seminar that was held during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the main speakers. This event attracted a large number of church leaders, and scientists.
The success of this event resulted in the establishment of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31 1981. The inauguration meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo, and it attracted a lot of attention.
KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the organization presented its own work and published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on the subject of creationism, which were published outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures at universities and churches throughout the country.
A KACR success was seen at KAIST University in Seoul. There, enough students were fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support to construct a small museum on campus showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.
In addition to its work, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine called CREATION. The magazine covers a variety of topics in the field of creation science. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It has also established a network of local branch offices that give seminars and talks to schoolchildren and other community groups.
