What is Pragmatics?
Pragmatics examines the relationship between language and context. It asks questions like What do people actually mean when they use words?
It's a philosophy that is focused on practical and reasonable actions. It contrasts with idealism which is the idea that one should adhere to their principles regardless of the circumstances.
What is Pragmatics?
The study of pragmatics focuses on how language users communicate and interact with each with one another. It is often seen as a component of language, however it differs from semantics since it focuses on what the user is trying to communicate, not what the actual meaning is.

However, their ranking is dependent on the database. This difference is due to the fact that pragmatics is a multidisciplinary field that intersects with other disciplines.
This makes it difficult to classify the top authors in pragmatics according to the number of publications they have. However, it is possible to identify the most influential authors by examining their contributions to the field of pragmatics. Some scholars have suggested for instance that pragmatics isn't an academic discipline by itself because it studies how people perceive and use language without necessarily referring to the facts about what was actually said. This sort of approach is referred to as far-side pragmatics. Some scholars, however have argued that this field ought to be considered an independent discipline because it examines how cultural and social influences affect the meaning and usage of language. This is known as near-side pragmatics.
The pragmatics field also discusses the inferential nature of utterances and the importance of the primary pragmatic processes in determining what a speaker is saying in the sentence. These are topics that are more thoroughly discussed in the papers of Recanati and Bach. Both papers discuss the notions saturation and free pragmatic enrichment. These are crucial processes that influence the meaning of utterances.
